On the March 20 last year police attended the address of Darren Coventon (41) in Hall Court, Fen Drayton. There was a strong smell of cannabis coming from the property and Coventon was arrested as he came to the door stating “I’ve only got a few plants mate”.
Inside his flat we found more than 200 cannabis plants with a potential value of more than £100,000. We also found mixtures of cocaine and benzocaine worth £7,920, MDMA worth £6,650, cannabis resin worth £1,170 as well as quantities of crack cocaine and MKAT.
Coventon was released on bail whilst forensic and electronic investigation was conducted.
South Cambs Police share information and work closely with our partner agencies to tackle crime and disorder. In mid 2014 whilst on bail for the drugs offences Coventon’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier frequently strayed and attacked and killed three cats belonging to local residents which caused a great deal of distress to the village. Police assisted South Cambridgeshire District Council by providing evidence in support of a Dog Control Order under the Dogs Act 1871. South Cambs District Council obtained the order in October which ordered that Coventon keep his dog muzzled and on a lead in public and to pay a total of £600 costs.
We also shared information with Coventon’s letting agent Cambs Property Bureau who were unaware of any issues, and without hesitation began the process of having Coventon removed from his home for breach of his tenancy.
Coventon was arrested again in December when he was stopped by plain clothed officers driving on Milton Road, Cambridge. Inside his car we found a Tazer and CS incapacitation spray.
Coventon was then remanded in custody until he appeared at Cambridge Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to possessing the weapons and the drugs but denied possessing drugs with the intent to supply them. After just 30 minutes of deliberation the jury was unanimous in finding him guilty.
Coventon was convicted of the following offences:
- Two counts of possessing a weapon for the discharge of a noxious liquid / gas / electrical incapacitation device.
- Possession of a Class A controlled drug – Crack Cocaine.
- Possession with the intent to supply a Class A controlled drug – Cocaine.
- Possession with the intent to supply a Class A controlled drug – MDMA.
- Possession of a Class B controlled drug – Cathinone Derivative (MKAT).
- Produce a Class B controlled drug – Cannabis.
- Possession with the intent to supply a Class B controlled drug – Cannabis.
He was sentenced to two years and three months in prison. We will be destroying all his drugs and weapons. Both Coventon and his dog have been evicted from Hall Court, Fen Drayton.
